The undergraduate real estate professional programme offered by the Department of Property Management, Faculty of Geoinformation and Real Estate (FGHT), University Technology Malaysia is the first in Malaysia. Its initial intake for the Degree in Property Management was in 1973 and they graduated in 1978 and in terms of enrollment, this department has the highest number in the faculty.
As to date, the department has produced more than 1200 undergraduates and 200 postgraduates. Most of the graduates have attached themselves as property managers, valuers, estate agents and property consultants in public sectors, for examples, the Department of Valuation and Property Services, Ministry of Finance, as well as in various States and Local Authorities. Some have attached themselves with corporate bodies such as the Amanah Raya Berhad, Malaysian Railway (KTM), Telecom Malaysia (TM), PETRONAS, Urban Development Authority (UDA), and Financial Institutions giving advice on property related matters. Others have ventured into property consultancy business or found employment with developers and chain superstores. The professional body governing their activities is the Board of Valuers, Appraisers and Estate Agents.
In addition to the undergraduate programme, the department has introduced Masters and PhD program in Real Estate since 1993 and Masters and PhD program in Facility Management since 1996. This department was the first in the university to expand its education program at Masters Level oversea, in particular to the Republic of Indonesia since 1993 and as of to date, more that 100 have graduated from this initiative.
This department is well served by two professors, one visiting professor, 6 Associate professors, 3 senior lecturers, 10 lecturers and a tutor. Some of the department’s faculty members also engaged themselves as advisers or committee members to organizations both local and abroad. They are also active in research and consultancy. In the near future, this department is planning to improve further the quality of its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as well as further strengthen its relationship with the industry.
