Course In Hydrography

Course in Hydrography UTM Hydro I Course (FIG/IHO/ICA Category B) with options Hydrography to Support Port Management and Coastal Engineering, and Inland Waters Hydrography

Introduction

Since 1980 there has been a remarkable increase in offshore and coastal activities. These rapid developments subsequently increase the need of personnel with sound knowledge and understanding in the science of hydrographic surveying.

The Faculty of Geoinformation Science and Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is the only academic institution in Malaysia and Southeast Asia region presently focusing its effort towards the development of hydrographic surveying. One of the main objectives of the faculty is to provide an education and training for hydrographic surveyors to cater for the increasing need of the country.

In 1995, the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Advisory Board has recognized the HYDRO I course as meeting their Category B standards for the training of hydrographic surveyors. The first HYDRO I course was conducted in 1995. After that, seven more HYDRO I course had been successfully conducted. The participants attended the course were not only from local but also abroad. In 2007, the UTM HYDRO I Course is re-accredited for another six years.

In April 1998, a working paper for conducting the HYDRO II Course (FIG/IHO/ICA Category A) in UTM was submitted to the FIG/IHO Advisory Board and presented in July 1998 at the Board’s Annual meeting in Tokyo, Japan. The outcome of the meeting recognized that the HYDRO II Course met the Board’s Category A standards for the training of hydrographic surveyors. The first HYDRO II Course was conducted in 1999 and another followed this in 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
